How to Get Your HVAC System Ready for Spring

happy family excited getting HVAC system ready for Spring

The weather in Amarillo, Texas, is perfect for all sorts of fun outdoor activities in spring, but it also means you’ll need to use your air conditioning more. Here’s how to get your HVAC system ready for warm weather so it can run at peak efficiency and keep your home comfortable all spring and summer.

Make Sure Your Ductwork Is in Good Condition

Dust, dirt, mold, pest droppings, cobwebs, and other contaminants can accumulate inside your ductwork. Duct cleaning will lower your bills and improve your indoor air quality. Take the register off one of your vents and touch the side of the duct with your finger or a clean cloth. If you wipe away lots of dirt or dust, then your ducts need cleaning. You should also have your ductwork tested for leaks and missing or damaged insulation. Repairing these problems will increase efficiency and get rid of warm areas in your home.

Test Your Air Conditioner

On a warm day, switch your HVAC system from heating to cooling. Then, check the air coming from your vents every few hours. You should feel cool air coming out of your registers after a few minutes. If there’s no air coming out, it doesn’t feel cool, or you hear strange noises, turn your system off immediately and contact a professional for repairs. Leaving your air conditioner on when it’s not working well wastes energy and could cause serious damage.

Maintain Your System Regularly

Even if you don’t notice any problems, spring is a great time to give your system a tuneup to keep it at peak efficiency. Keep trash and plants away from your outdoor HVAC unit because it needs good airflow to work properly. You should also change your air filters regularly to save energy and get rid of pollen, dust, dirt, and other contaminants in your home. Check them to see if they’re dirty at least once a month.
